Riverhead Board of Education President Colin Palmer is not seeking re-election in next month’s school board election.

Palmer announced in a social media post last night he has decided not to run for a second term.

“It’s been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve the district as a board member for the past three years (the last as president), but the time has come for me to move onto other avenues of public service,” Palmer said in a post on Facebook.

Board member Brian Connelly of Riverhead is seeking a third term of office. First elected in 2018, Connelly was re-elected in 2021, and has served as both board president and vice president.

Seeking election for the first time is Kelly Freeborn of Baiting Hollow. She is an educator serving as the director of student services and assistant principal in the East Quogue Union Free School District.

There are two board seats up for election this year. Connelly and Freeborn were the only people who filed nominating petitions for school board trustee, Riverhead Central School District Clerk Dawn Bozuhoski said in an email late yesterday afternoon. The deadline for filing petitions was 5 p.m. yesterday.

A trustee’s term of office is three years. Trustees are volunteers who serve without compensation.

The school district election will take place on Tuesday, May 21, when voters will also decide the fate of the district’s proposed $201 million budget for the 2024-2025 school year.
