Update May 6, 12 p.m.:

The forum for Riverhead school board candidates scheduled for tonight has been canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances,” according to a Facebook post by the Butterfly Effect Project.

Original Story:

Riverhead school district voters and residents will have an opportunity next week to question school board candidates during a forum at the First Baptist Church of Riverhead.

The candidate forum will be held on Monday, May 6 at 6:30-8:30 p.m at the church, which is located at 1018 Northville Turnpike.

The event is being organized by the Butterfly Effect Project, Rural and Migrant Ministry and the New York Civil Liberties Union of Suffolk County. Spanish translation services will be provided.

The organizers request that people planning to attend the forum RSVP and submit questions for the candidates beforehand by filling out a Google form or by calling 631-591-0759. There will also be an open question-and-answer period at the forum.

This year’s school board election is uncontested, with two candidates running for the two open seats on the seven-person board. Board Vice President Brian Connelly of Riverhead is seeking a third term in office, while Kelly Freeborn of Baiting Hollow is seeking election for the first time. A trustee’s term of office is three years. Trustees are volunteers who serve without compensation.

The school district election will take place on Tuesday, May 21, when voters will also decide the fate of the district’s proposed $201 million budget for the 2024-2025 school year.
