The process behind Riverhead Town’s Comprehensive Plan is both unfortunate and misguided. When a comprehensive plan fails to reflect the desires and concerns of the community, something is clearly amiss. This plan should embody our collective vision for the future, yet it appears to be steering us in the wrong direction.

This is our town, our home, and our future. In my conversations with fellow residents, I have not encountered a single person who supports large-scale commercial development. While there is a general acceptance of moderate, measured development, the idea of steamrolling through with massive development projects is met with strong opposition. People want thoughtful growth that enhances our community, not overwhelming commercial expansion that disrupts our way of life.

So, how can we ensure that our town progresses in a slow and steady manner, aligned with the community’s values? The answer lies in creating and enacting a comprehensive plan that truly reflects these ideals. We can look to neighboring towns like Southold and Southampton, which have successfully balanced development with preservation. They have managed to maintain their charm and character while allowing for sensible growth. If they can do it, why can’t we?

If you care about the future of Riverhead, if you are frustrated with the current direction, and if you are concerned about the implications of uncontrolled development, now is the time to make your voice heard. Our town’s future depends on our collective action. Please take the time to email the town clerk wooten@townofriverheadny.gov or call 631-727-3200, ext. 251 (supervisor’s office) and ext. 253 (town board coordinator) to voice your opinion to the Town Board. You can attend meetings to express your concerns. Tell the Town Board that you want the comprehensive plan to reflect what the residents of Riverhead truly want. Make it clear that you prioritize preservation and thoughtful development over rampant and out-of-control expansion.

We have a responsibility to protect the character and quality of life in Riverhead for ourselves and for future generations. Let’s work together to ensure that our comprehensive plan embodies the values and aspirations of our community. Your voice matters, and together, we can make a difference.
