Cardboard boats set sail yesterday on the Peconic River in downtown Riverhead, with paddlers of all ages working hard to finish first — or stay afloat at all — in a competition for trophies and prizes.
Hundreds turned out to the Peconic Riverfront Saturday to watch teams of paddlers attempt to propel their cardboard vessels up the river and back to the town dock.
First launched in 2010, the popular race event draws a large crowd to the riverfront for games and activities, food and fun every summer.
The annual event is presented by the Riverhead BID, the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Riverhead.
