Heavy rain overnight flooded some local roadways, temporarily closing a few trouble spots to traffic.

More than four inches of rain fell in some portions of the local area between Sunday morning and early Monday morning, according to data published by the National Weather Service in New York. Rain totals in other areas were measured upwards of six inches, with the highest number registered in Miller Place at 9.84 inches. Rainfall of more than six inches was recorded in Hampton bays.

Flooding has mostly receded and all roads are open and passable this morning,  Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said.

Highway crews will be pumping out areas of persistent flooding early this morning.

A flash flood warning issued for Suffolk County expired at 6:30 a.m. A flood warning remains in effect county-wide until 10:30 this morning.

Western portions of Long Island were hit harder with heavy rains than eastern portions, the National Weather Service said.

The rain will shift eastward today, with showers and scattered thunderstorms expected across eastern regions through evening, according to the NWS forecast discussion.

There is the “potential for isolated severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding this afternoon into evening,” the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather outlook statement this morning. “The most vulnerable areas for flood impacts will be across southwestern CT, northeastern NJ, and much of Long Island due to saturated soils and high streamflows,” the weather service said.

The rest of the week will bring clear skies and sunshine to the local region, according to the weather service forecast, with seasonal temperatures topping out in the low 80s.
