(Updated: 8:20 a.m.) For the second time in two years, fire destroyed a home at 1535 Middle Road in Calverton early this morning.
A 911 caller reported his house was on fire at about 3:40 a.m.
Occupants of the home had already evacuated the premises when Riverhead police and firefighters arrived at the scene. Three residents were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non life threatening injuries, the Riverhead Fire Department said in a press release.
Riverhead firefighters found “heavy fire” at the house upon arrival, according to radio reports.
The fire was extinguished by approximately 50 firefighters from the Riverhead Fire Department along with four fire engines, two ladder trucks, one water tanker and two support vehicles. They were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Jamesport, Manorville and Wading River fire departments.
The fire was declared under control at 5:10 a.m. but firefighting operations remained ongoing for three hours after that, as firefighters tamped down hot spots at the scene.
The home, a two-story frame dwelling, set far back off the south side of Middle Road near Deep Hole Road, was recently rebuilt, after a fire destroyed the home in the same location on Sept. 22, 2023.
Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps., Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance, Manorville Ambulance and Westhampton Ambulance companies were requested and responded to the scene.
Flanders Fire Department was on stand by in the Riverhead Fire Department Headquarters and handled two additional calls for service in Riverhead.
Mattituck Fire Department Ambulance responded to the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Headquarters to stand by for Riverhead.
Middle Road was closed to through-traffic in the area while firefighting operations continued. The road remained closed as of 8:20 a.m.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Riverhead Town Fire Marshall’s Office, the Riverhead Town Detective Squad and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad, Riverhead FD said in a press release.
