The Riverhead Central School District will have a two-hour delayed opening Monday morning due to inclement weather, the district announced late Sunday afternoon. All before-school activities have been canceled.
Riverhead Town Hall and all town offices will also have a two-hour delayed opening Monday morning, the supervisor’s office said in a press release.
The National Weather Service in a statement issued late Sunday afternoon urged travelers use caution for areas of black ice through the Monday morning commute.
Temperatures will drop well down into the the teens tonight, with any moisture or slush on untreated surfaces quickly refreezing after sundown, the weather service said.
Gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph may bring down additional snow laden tree branches through overnight, with isolated power outages possible, according to the weather service..
Wind chill values will fall to around zero degrees for the NYC/NJ metro area and coast, and as low as 8 below zero across the interior tonight into Monday morning. At these temperatures, frostbite can occur in as little as a half-hour on unprotected skin, the weather service said.
The National Weather Service reported 7.3 inches of snow at its office in Upton Sunday. Most areas of Suffolk County saw accumulations of between 6 and 8 inches, according to snowfall reports published by the weather service.
