Snow continues to fall across the region this morning as a low pressure system along the Mid-Atlantic coast moves east-northeast.
The National Weather Service now forecasts accumulations of 4 to 6 inches in eastern Suffolk County, with locally higher totals possible.
“It’s a slushy, accumulating snow. The roads are not in good shape right now,” Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said this morning. “Things will get better as the day goes on,” he said.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m.
Highway crews reported to work at 11 o’clock last night, Zaleski said. “We got ahead of it, salt-sanded the roads, but as soon as the temperature dropped, they got icy,” he said.
“We want to get this scraped off and then we’ll salt-sand again, because they’re talking about a big temperature drop,” Zaleski said.
The weather service says winds will pick up during the late morning and afternoon, growing more gusty through the evening. Wind chills late tonight into early Monday morning will dip to -5 to 5 above, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
Zaleski asks people to postpone all but essential travel this morning.
“Please be patient and give us time to work,” he said. “The roads are hazardous.” Zaleski asked for cooperation. “The less people on the road, the more efficiently we can do our job.”
