Riverhead Fire Department's Ironmen Drill Team hosted a spaghetti dinner fundraiser Saturday night at the firehouse. 

Riverhead firefighters fought a fire in a trash compactor at the TJ Maxx store on Route 58 Saturday night.

Firefighters found the contents of the compactor in flames when they arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m.

The fire forced the evacuation of the store, where smoke had infiltrated the building. The store was closed for the night, according to an employee who answered the phone.

Shanice Allen broke the Riverhead High School girls basketball all-time point record during the Waves home-court victory over the Centereach Cougars Thursday night, scoring 36 points to bring her career total to 1,204, shattering the previous record of 1,195 set in 1991 by Felicia Hobson.

A 50-year-old Brookhaven man was killed crossing East Main Street Friday evening at about 5:40 p.m.

Police said Scott Wayte was attempting to cross the street from north to south near Union Avenue when he was struck by an unknown westbound vehicle and thrown into the eastbound lane. He was then struck by an eastbound Honda Pilot operated by Ernest Austin, 53, of Glen Rock, Pa.

A single-car accident on Sound Avenue this morning sent an elderly woman to the hospital with minor injuries.

An abandoned Mercedes ablaze in a farm field drew Riverhead firefighters to Horton Avenue Sunday night.

Firefighters found the late-model sedan parked about 30 ft off the road fully engulfed in flames, south of Reeves Avenue. The vehicle was unoccupied, Riverhead Fire Department First Assistant Chief Joseph Raynor said.
