Why all East End residents need to embrace local agriculture, support it and promote it.

Two old friends who share a love of craft beer are establishing a 20-acre hop farm on the North Fork that represents nearly 10 percent of all the acreage currently devoted to commercial hop production in New York State.

Suffolk County legislators Tuesday approved the purchase of development rights on 22.1 acres of farmland on the northwest corner of Sound and Roanoke avenues in Riverhead.

A new code regulating farm stands was unanimously adopted yesterday by the Riverhead Town Board over the opposition of civic groups and residents who argue that it will have unintended consequences that may change the rural landscape of Riverhead Town.

“People are going to come here expecting apples grown on Long Island and actually get apples grown in Maine or Vermont,” said Abra Morawiec, a Jamesport farmer.
