Downtown revitalization

Riverhead officials are gearing up to implement paid parking downtown as they prepare for development of the town square and a multi-story garage in the First Street lot.

A new “family-friendly, casual” restaurant is now open across from the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, offering a menu with "a little bit of everything for everyone."

Takkii Ramen, which focuses its menu on the popular noodle and broth based dish, opened in June on West Main Street just west of Griffing Avenue.

Consultants hired this spring to design the town square, riverfront park and streetscape improvements — the centerpiece of Riverhead Town’s massive downtown revitalization effort — presented plans and drawings at a public information meeting at Riverhead Town Hall Wednesday night.

The public is invited to an information session about the amphitheater proposed as part of the Riverhead town square.

The grant will help fund a parking garage in the First Street parking lot, as well as flood mitigation measures and streetscape improvements.

Riverhead Town plans to submit a grant application for up to $2 million in funding on behalf of J. Petrocelli Development in connection with the demolition of the building at 127 East Main Street to make way for a proposed mixed use building on the site.

The RIDA approved a 16-year phased abatement of real property taxes for the project, as well as mortgage recording tax and sales tax exemptions valued at more than $3 million.

The Town Board took several actions at its April 2 meeting related to the development of the town square on East Main Street and a parking garage on First Street.
