Ice rink

The Town Board has cobbled together funds originally set aside for other purposes because the main funding source counted on by officials for the rink project has not yet come through.

Riverhead’s new ice rink, promised to offer free programs and discounts for residents, has fallen short on benefits offered and used.

A second hockey rink is now open at the Peconic Ice Rinks in Calverton. The outdoor rink will be used for dek and roller hockey most of the year and transform into a second ice rink in the winter months

Peconic Hockey's bubble dome is up and the rink operator is busy getting the site ready to open, hoping to start offering skating and hockey classes next month.

The indoor ice rink will be donated to the town by Peconic Hockey Foundation, which will occupy, operated and manage the facility.

Town board members agreed to have the town attorney begin negotiating with Peconic Hockey, with the goal of entering into a public-private partnership that will allow the eventual construction of a covered NHL-sized ice rink in the park.

The Stotzky Park ice rink is now open to the public for skating free of charge to town residents, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, "as long as the weather holds," Councilman George Gabrielsen said Sunday.
