Riverhead firefighters successfully extinguished a gas tanker truck fire tonight on East Main Street near Elton Avenue, Riverhead Police said in a press release.
Police responded to a report of a tanker truck on fire just west of the intersection of East Main and Elton at about 6:17 p.m. to find the truck engulfed in fire, according to the press release.
Riverhead Police, with the assistance of New York State Police and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, shut down the roadways in the surrounding area.
Riverhead firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, police said.
The driver of the truck suffered a minor injury and was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment, according to the police report.
Riverhead Fire Marshal, New York State DEC and Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier were all notified, police said.
East Main Street between Elton Avenue and Hubbard Avenue was closed to traffic until just after midnight, while police investigated the fire.
