A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Long Island at 10:45 a.m. today, 79 miles south-southeast of Southampton, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The quake occurred 4.1 miles deep in the Atlantic Ocean at 39.799°N, 71.927°W and could be felt throughout the East End.
One Calverton resident, Ken Goroleski, said he felt a rumbling that shook his whole house.
The USGS had several reports of shaking felt in Riverhead Town at the time of the quake. (If you felt shaking you can report it at the USGS website.)
Neither the Riverhead Town Police nor the Riverhead Fire Department had received any calls to report the rumbing. The town supervisor’s office did not hear anything about the earthquake, according to Deputy Supervisor Jill Lewis.
