The River and Roots Community Garden had its official grand opening Friday afternoon, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Riverhead Town officials and the dedication of the Dr. John Goldman Children’s Garden.

Town Supervisor Sean Walter, Councilman James Wooten and Councilwoman Jodi Giglio were on had to cut the ribbon.

Walter praised the community garden’s cofounders, Laurie Nigro and Amy Davidson, for their vision and persistence.

“This is a fantastic thing for downtown Riverhead,” the supervisor said.

Dr. Goldman’s son, Robert, also attended the ceremonies. Goldman, now a Rhode Island resident, said his family appreciated the tribute to his father, a child psychologist and longtime Riverhead resident.

“We have had so much support in this endeavor from the town, the BID, the Cooperative Extension, the library, the schools, and the community in general. It is a real community project,” Nigro said.

The garden’s beds are growing with all sorts of vegetables, some of which are already being harvested.
