Another cloudy afternoon, soon to be early evening brought a full card of racing to Riverhead Raceway. The day started with a 20 lap Legends race. It was a quiet, yet caution filled race as the yellow flag went up 4 times. Chris Young the points leader in the #49 “Ray the Plumber” car started on the pole, and finished first for his fourth win of the season.

Next race was the Super Pro Trucks, a twenty lap race with a small field of only ten trucks. It was an uneventful race, except for #81 Chris Turbush rear-endeding #95 driven Erin Dumicich, causing a spin out in turn 4. He was called for rough riding,a penalty, and put to the back of the pack. In the end, Roger Turbush finished first, his second in two weeks, his third of the year, and eighth win in the Super Pro Truck Division.

In the Blunderbust race, Car #77 driven by Tim Mulqueen held the lead until lap 15, getting bumped by Car #4, driven by Tom Pickerell sending him into the backstretch and out of the race. This gave the lead to car #00 driven by Tom “Wild Child” Walkowiak and also the victory in the end. It was his 48th career win. An incident at the end of the race between car #19, driven by Robert Bader & Car #22, driven by Scott Maliszewski while the cars were exiting the track caused tempers to flare between these two as Car #22 backed into Car #19 raising a cheer from the crowd, which led to the tempers overheating a bit more in the pit area.

The Figure-Eight race, a twenty lap race,  was accident filled, starting from lap one. The race was stopped so many times due to accidents, and not so great driving( shades of the LIE), parts of cars flying everywhere, that it was called in the 9th lap, due to a time constriction. At one point car #77, driven by Tim MulQueen actually drove over the hood of car #6, shearing off the front fender. Later in the race car #14 , driven by Tom Ferrara, was hit and then made a beeline for the side of car #77, driven by Tim MulQueen, and in a shower of sparks, sending him into the wall of turn 3&4. Car #77 was done for the night, as was car #14. In the end it was it was car #28, driven by Roger Maynor taking the checkered flag. It was his second career win.

The Modifieds were on the blacktop for a 35 lap race. It was one of the few clean races of the evening, and was virtually over in a “racing minute”. There were some tight battles in the turns, but in the end, car #8x, driven by Ed Brunnhoelzl III would take the checkered flag. His first win in two seasons at Riverhead, and his second win in three years.

Hope you enjoy the photo’s and the recap, see you next week…………..at the Races !!
