The 2012 Teeny Award winners were announced at ceremony at Eastport-South Manor High School Sunday.
McGann-Mercy’s Nick Motlenski won the award for lead actor in both the drama and comedy categories for his performances in The Glass Menagerie and Arsenic and Old Lace.
Moletski’s costar in Arsenic, Nicole Chiuchiolo, won the award for lead actress in a comedy.
McGann-Mercy High School received the 2012 Innovations in Theatre Education Award, in recognition of its addition of a third production during the school year devoted to serious drama by such playwrights as Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder, Edward Albee and Eugene O’Neill.
Riverhead High School’s Jonathan Troiano won the outstanding performance award for his role as “Action” in West Side Story.
The Teeny Awards, conceived from the idea of the Antoinette Perry Awards – The Tony Awards – for Broadway shows, has been celebrating excellence in high school theater across the East End of Long Island since 2002, and is presented and coordinated by East End Arts.
“The Teeny Awards have accomplished in the past 10 years exactly what was expected: calling attention to the value of theatre experience in developing well-rounded, confident young adults,” East End Arts executive director Pat Snyder said in a news release announcing the award winners. “East End Arts is proud to have introduced this very special program that recognizes and applauds our talented students of the East End.”
Each of the award winners was presented with a glass trophy at the awards ceremony, the 10th annual awards presentation.
Scenes from some outstanding performances from this year’s productions were performed by cast members: Westhampton Beach, A Chorus Line; Southold, Curtains; Riverhead, Working; and Eastport-South Manor, a collage from West Side Story. East End Arts’ 2012 Music Masters Fellowship high school vocal students also performed under the direction of Lauren Kinhan.
