Snow is changing over to freezing rain and will become all rain this morning as warmer air moves across the East End, according to the National Weather Service. Rain may be heavy at times, the weather service said.

The rain will change to a wintry mix later today and then back to all snow before tapering off by this evening, according to the forecast. Some
additional snow accumulation is possible before it ends.

“Snow and ice will make the morning commute fairly treacherous, especially for untreated surfaces,” according to the weather service.

Riverhead highway crews started working on local roads at 2 a.m. today, spreading sand and salt on surfaces, Superintendent George Woodson said.

“We started plowing at 4:30,” Woodson said this morning. “We’re trying to get all the snow and slush off the roads before it rains hard.”

Riverhead Central School District closed all its schools today due to hazardous travel conditions.

A winter storm emergency is in effect in the Town of Riverhead until 6 p.m. today. In a statement issued late last night, Supervisor Sean Walter ordered all parked cars off all roads for the duration of the declared emergency.

With more snow and temperatures falling into the teens tonight, according to the NWS forecast, travel this evening could be treacherous.

“We’ll see what happens later in terms of the type of precipitation we have,” Woodson said. “With this kind of storm, you just have to wait and see what comes.”

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Hazardous travel conditions exist and motorists should use extra caution, the weather service said.
