A Mattituck man was killed in the head-on collision on Route 58 at Harrison Avenue early this morning.

Riverhead police said Jason Damianos, 49, was pronounced dead at Peconic Bay Medical Center following the accident.

Damianos was driving a 2007 Ford pickup truck eastbound on Route 58, and attempted to turn left onto Harrison Avenue, colliding with a  westbound Jeep Cherokee operated by Savannah Lake. The crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m.  The accident closed the eastbound lanes of Route 58 between Woodcrest and Harrison avenues.

Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps initially requested aviation to transport one victim to Stony Brook University Hospital but then decided to take the patient to PBMC.

Riverhead Fire Department responded to a request for heavy rescue and then to secure a landing zone at Riverhead High School.

The accident is under investigation by Riverhead Police detectives and a State Police accident reconstruction team, police said.

Damianos was the owner of Jason’s Vineyard in Jamesport.
