Riverhead Fire Department secured a landing zone at Riley Avenue Elementary School for a Suffolk Police helicopter last night.

A motorcyclist was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after a collision with a car on Manor Road and Twomey Avenue in Calverton last night.

Riverhead Police detectives said Charles R. Pitre of Mastic was operating a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle on Manor Road at about 6:15 p.m. when a 2001 Toyota Camry operated by Paul J. Mejia of Middle Island on Twomey Avenue crossed the Harley’s lane of travel. Pitre struck the rear passenger’s side of the Camry and was thrown from the Harley, police said. Mejia was not injured and remained on the scene.

Pitre suffered injuries to his lower extremities and was transported from the scene by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to a landing zone at Riley Avenue Elementary School, where a Suffolk County Police helicopter transported him to Stony Brook, according to a police report. Riverhead Fire Department secured the landing zone.

Mejia was issued a traffic summons on scene for failing to stop at the intersection, police said.

Any additional witnesses to the accident may contact the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500.
