A Popeyes restaurant on Route 58 got preliminary site plan approval today from the Riverhead Town Planning Board.

The 2,265 sq. ft. fast food restaurant is planned for a currently vacant, wooded one-acre lot just west of DMV Plaza.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, a publicly traded company, was founded in New Orleans in 1972. It operates and franchises the “quick-service restaurants” — today numbering 2,000 worldwide, a according to the company website — that serve Southern-style chicken and seafood.

The Popeyes Riverhead site is located in the Business Center zoning use district. The planning board today assumed lead agency status and issued a negative declaration under the State Environmental Quality Review Act, meaning that no environmental impact statement will be required.
