A Riverhead man is facing sex crime charges for abusing a young child, New York State Police said in a press release this afternoon.

Police said the mother of the child went to the Riverside barracks Friday afternoon to report that her five-year-old son had been sexually abused by an adult male roommate earlier in the week at a residence in Riverside, according to the press release.

Troopers located and arrested Amilcar Alvarado, 32, and charged him with criminal sexual act in the first degree (B-felony), sex abuse in the first degree (D-felony), and endangering the welfare of a child (A-misdemeanor), police said.

Alvarado was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court and remanded to the Suffolk County jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, according to State Police.  He is due back in court on Oct. 17.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. By law, a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
