Riverhead firefighters saved a flock of chickens from a burning chicken coop on Williams Way South in Calverton this morning.
Firefighters entered the coop, which was engulfed in flames, and pulled out the chickens, which were huddled in a corner of the structure, Riverhead Fire Chief Kevin Brooks said.
The homeowner called 911 at about 5:45 a.m. to report that his chicken coop was fully engulfed in flames.
About 50 firefighters responded to the report of a structure fire.
The chief and a responding crew from the Twomey Avenue substation quickly put water on the fire to prevent it from spreading to a nearby shed and allow a crew to enter the 10- by 20-foot structure to rescue the chickens.
The fire, to the rear of the yard, didn’t threaten any residences, Brooks said.
“Fires up there always scare me because they’re always wind-driven,” the chief said. “This was too. There were sparks flying all over,” he said.
“And boy was it cold.”
