Blazing heat and high humidity will be back today, pushing the heat index value as high as 104 degrees in Riverhead, according to the National Weather Service.
A heat advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m.
An air quality alert is also in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., as ground level ozone will make the air unhealthy for sensitive groups. The air quality index on Long Island is forecast to reach 110 today.
Health officials urge all residents to take necessary precautions to stay cool, remain hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor exertion. The very young, the elderly and people with pre-existing respiratory conditions are at special risk.
The Riverhead Town Senior Recreation Center on Shade Tree Lane in Aquebogue will be open as a cooling center until 4:30 p.m. today for anyone who needs a place to beat the heat, Riverhead Town Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith said in a press release.
All Riverhead Town beach facilities will remain open until 7 p.m. today.
If you spend time outdoors today, health officials urge you to drink plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat, clothing, sunglasses and SPF 30+ sunscreen.
Remember to provide shade and water for your pets if they are outdoors. The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals urges pet owners to bring their cats and dogs inside during the hottest part of the day.
“Never leave your animal alone in a vehicle. Even with the windows open, a parked automobile can quickly become a furnace,” SPCA Chief Roy Gross said.
Limit their exercise, too. The best time is early morning or evening, Gross said.
“Take care not to let your dog stand on hot asphalt, his body can heat up quickly and his sensitive paw pads can easily burn,” he said.
Gross reminded residents: “In Suffolk County tethering a dog outside in temperatures over 90 degrees is against the law.”
