A Riverhead man been charged with criminal possession of stolen property after he was seen operating a stolen truck on Middle Road in Riverhead last night.

Police said an employee of Glenwood Village saw a company truck traveling on Middle Road in Riverhead at about 10 p.m. that he knew was unregistered and supposed to be in a storage area at Glenwood Village. He followed the vehicle and observed it pulling into a driveway at 434 Middle Road, then called police, according to a police report.

A police investigation determined the vehicle had been stolen from Glenwood Village and that the operator of the vehicle was Terry M. Smith, 55, a resident at that address, police said.

Smith was placed under arrest and transported to Riverhead polce headquarters where he was charged with one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the third degree, a class D felony, and held for arraignment. During processing, police that Smith is currently on parole in New York State. The parole department was notified of this incident and issued a parole warrant for Smith’s arrest.

According to the N.Y. State Department of Corrections, Smith was under parole supervision for a previous conviction of criminal possession of stolen property and was released from state prison last November.
