A snowfall of 4 to 6 inches is expected on Long Island overnight tonight and Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

National Weather Service forecasters say a low pressure system will develop off the Mid-Atlantic coast and and track south and east of Long Island Friday morning, passing over or very close to the 40/70 benchmark.

The snow is expected to move into the region around midnight, with the steadiest snow falling between 3 and 4 a.m. through 8-10 a.m. Friday. It is expected to taper off 10 a.m.-12 noon.

If the track of the low shifts closer to the coast, snowfall amounts on Long Island will be higher, but if it tracks more to the east, totals will be lower, weather service forecasters said in a discussion statement.

Riverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said highway crews are gearing up for sanding and plowing tonight, loading up plow trucks with sand and checking equipment. He has a full crew ready to work, he said. Fortunately the recent surge in COVID-19 cases has not taken a toll on his workforce so far.

A winter weather advisory is in effect from midnight tonight through 12 noon Friday.

As the low moves northeast of the region and intensifies, winds will shift to the northwest and gusts between 20-25 mph during Friday afternoon and evening, the weather service said.

High temperatures tomorrow will hover just above freezing, according to the forecast, with a high around 34 Saturday. Temperatures will move into the low 40s Sunday, when there is a 60% chance of showers in the afternoon, continuing through the evening.
