Updated- Dec. 31, 5 a.m. Riverhead Fire Department quickly knocked down a structure fire at 16 Doris Avenue in Riverhead Friday evening and, with police, rescued two people from the burning home.

Before firefighters arrived at the scene, a Riverhead police officer assisted a resident out of the home through the front entrance, according to the police report. The resident told police that another resident was still inside. Police officers on scene went around to the rear of the home and were able to locate a man in a rear room, police said.  The officers attempted to remove the man through a window of that room but were unsuccessful due to heavy smoke and heat conditions, according to the police report.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, one firefighter was able to enter the home through the rear window and assist the resident to the window, where the he was pulled from the home by Riverhead police officers.

Both residents were taken by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Peconic Bay Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Riverhead Town Police were dispatched to a call for an active structure fire at the home yesterday at about 4:52 p.m., police said in a press release early this morning. Riverhead Fire Department arrived on scene moments later.

A live wire was down near the house. The fire chief in charge of the scene asked for PSE&G to cut power to the home. The utility company remotely de-energized the area, knocking out power to more than 1,300 customers and traffic signals on the roads near the location of the fire, including signals on the east end of Route 58 and Route 25. The signals have since been reactivated, except the one at the intersection of Main Road (NY 25) and Cross River Drive (CR 105), which is waiting for a re-set.

Second Assistant Chief J.R. Renten declared the fire under control at at 5:17 p.m.

The scene was turned over to the Riverhead Town Fire Marshal for an investigation.

Renten discharged firefighters from the scene at 5:58 p.m.
