The man shot and critically injured on East Main Street Jan. 6 has died, Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller told RiverheadLOCAL this afternoon.

The shooter remains at large, Hegermiller said. The case has been turned over to the Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad and is under active investigation, the chief said.

James Ayers, 47, of Flanders was shot in the head outside 747 East Main Street, across from Riverhead Town Hall, on Friday, Jan. 6 at about 6:15 p.m. He was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition and subsequently underwent emergency surgery.

Ayers died last Thursday, Hegermiller said.

In a press release issued in the early morning hours of Jan. 7, Riverhead Police said they were searching for possibly two perpetrators in the shooting. The suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction, police said.
