USCG Ensign Shannon Schmidt

Shannon Schmidt, a 2018 Riverhead High School graduate, graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, May 17 and commissioned as an officer. She also played lacrosse for the academy. Shannon will be heading to San Juan Puerto Rico to work as a Deck Watch Officer on a Fast Response Cutter. Her family is very proud of her and her accomplishment and rightly so.

The Riverhead Fire Department held their 57th annual installation and dinner dance on Friday, May 19 at the Atlantis Aquarium and Sea Star Ballroom for the firefighters’ volunteers and their guests. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Chief Joseph Hartman who introduced the fire department commissioners Chairman Ed Carey, Vice-Chairman Mark Conklin, Commissioner John Tradeski, Jr., Commissioner Dennis Hamill and Commissioner William Kelly, Sr., as well as the dignitaries State Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, Riverhead Town Board Members Ken Rothwell and Bob Kern and standing in for County Legislator Al Krupski was Catherine Stark. The Chiefs installed were Chief Joseph Hartman, 1stAssistant William Renten, Sr., 2nd Assistant Piotr Kurzyna and 3rdAssistant Sean Brennan. The top five responders for the year 2022 in the Riverhead Fire Department were recognized and they are John Tradeski Jr (280 points), Robert Szczepanik (269 points), Justin Berry (257 points), Paul Sparrow (228 points) and Frank Darrow (223 points). Company of the Year for 2022 was recognized as the Ever-Ready Engine Company #3 and Firefighter of the year for 2022 was 1st Lt. Justin Berry. Kudos to all the recipients receiving awards and all the fire department volunteers who are involved in our community serving the residents 365 days of the year.

Two members of the fire department have reached the milestone of 50 years of service and were recognized by FASNY and they are Marvin Warner of the Washington Engine Company #2 and Myron (Corky) Young of the Ever-Ready Engine Company # 3 and they join the others Ray Atkins (50), John Hubbard (51), Bruce Edwards (51), Paul Sparrow (52), William Sanok (53), Gerald Mapes (53), Frank Densieski (54), John Kurpetski (56), Conrad Dabrowski (56), Joseph Gadzinski (57), Robert Kujawski (58), Jim Creighton (60), Richard Gadzinski (60), William Bilski (63) and Marty Montag (72). A big thank you to the banquet committee Commissioner John Tradeski, Jr., Captain Andrew Smith and Captain William Sproston for setting up the affair. 

The First Congregational Church of Riverhead will hold a piano recital by Jeffrey Wentz on Sunday, June 4 at 4 pm. Listen to the music of Haydn, Brahms and Debussy making it a wonderful afternoon of delightful entertainment. Free admission although donations are welcome and a reception follows. 

The Rescue Vixens Present “Retro Car Show” on Sunday, June 4 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Riverhead Elks Club, 1239 East Main Street in Riverhead. Vendors, Food Truck, Live Music, Car Competition and 1950 Costume Contest. A family fun day with special performance by Bad Reputation Band and Retro Rewind Band. 

The Friends of the Riverhead Free Library encourages everyone to check out the books for sale in the Yellow Barn and their hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 2 pm. On Saturday, June 10 from 10 am to 2 pm they will be open. So stock up for your summer reading and support the Friends while reading!

The Friends of the Riverhead Free Library will host an Outdoor Summer Concert “BRILL-IANT” The Songwriters of NYC’s House of Hits on Saturday, June 17 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Singer/songwriter Willa Bassen will delight, entertain and encourage you to sing along with songs of legendary songwriters like Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Burt Bacharach and more. Bring your friends, your neighbors and your chair and enjoy an evening of music.

The Old Steeple Community Church on the Main Road in Aquebogue announces Its BBQ Time! On Saturday, July 22 you can pick up your food between 4 and 6 pm as it is take- out only. Enjoy barbecued chicken, baked potato, coleslaw, corn on the cob, roll and watermelon. Tickets purchased on or before July 15 are $25 each and $30 if purchased between July 16-20. On July 4th, the Greater Jamesport Civic Association will hold its annual Independence Day Ceremony at 10 am at the Memorial Garden by the gazebo at the corner of Main Road and South Jamesport Avenue. This will be followed immediately by a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the building that is now the George Young Community Center and the 75thanniversary of the Civic Association. Wow, isn’t that amazing and awesome celebration and our community should truly be proud of. Mark your calendars now for this great event. The Community Center was previously a grade school. The Civic Association needs your help and requests that individuals who may have photos or other memorabilia related to the school or the Civic Association please contact them.
