Peconic Bay Power Squadron will present “America’s Boating Course,” in two four-hour sessions at Port of Egypt Marine in Southold.
The course, which is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and the U.S. Coast Guard, allows boaters to comply with New York’s boater education law requirements, and covers boating law, safety equipment, safe boating practices, navigation, boating emergencies, personal watercraft, charts, GPS, trailering and more.
Attendees will receive the 244-page America’s Boating Course manual, and after passing an exam, a completion certificate and wallet card, indicating that compliance with the N.Y. education requirement. Many insurance companies offer discounts to boaters who earn their completion certificate.
There is a $60 fee for the two-session course, which includes the cost of the manual.
Each session begins at 9 a.m. Students must be at least 10 years of age on or before 11 May 2024.

Under state law, beginning in this year, all operators of motorized watercraft born on or after Jan. 1, 1978 must complete a state-approved boating safety course. Beginning in 2025, completion of a state-approved course is required for all operators of motorized watercraft regardless of age.
Failure to comply could result in a fine of between $100 and $250. The law does not apply to operators of sailboats under sail, kayaks, standup paddle-boards, rowboats or canoes.
Port of Egypt Marine is located at 62300 Route 25 in Southold.
