Riverhead Police made one felony DWI arrest and issued numerous summonses during a seatbelt/safety checkpoint on Roanoke Avenue near First Street Thursday, according to a police press release.

Police said a 41-year-old Riverhead man with a prior DWI conviction entered the checkpoint with an open container of an alcoholic beverage in his vehicle. After an investigation, Maynor De Leon was arrested on a felony driving while intoxicated charge, police said. His vehicle was impounded under Suffolk County’s seizure law due to his prior DWI conviction, according to the report.

Riverhead Police said summonses were issued to other drivers during the enforcement checkpoint for no seatbelts, failure to use proper child safety restraints, uninspected vehicles and unauthorized tinted windows.

Editor’s note: A criminal charge is an accusation. A person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
