Cardboard boats will again set sail — or sink — on the Peconic River Aug. 3, when Riverhead’s popular cardboard boat races take place on the downtown riverfront.

The crowd-pleasing summer event, first launched in 2010, challenges people of all ages to construct boats of cardboard and duct tape for competition in four race divisions: Youth Regatta (all crew members must be under 12), Grand National Regatta (all crew members must be 12 and over), Yacht Club Regatta (crew can be any combination of ages) and the Outlaw Race (If your boat can still float after competing in one of the other races, here’s your second chance.)

(All boats must be constructed only of corrugated cardboard, duct tape, water-based glue and latex paint. See complete rules here.) There will be games and activities before the first race starts at 11 a.m. Awards ceremony starts at 1 p.m.

Registration fee for each vessel is $25 (includes captain). Each additional crew member is $10.
