The Riverhead Police Department swore in a new sergeant last Thursday.
Police Officer Karli E. Conyers took the oath of office, administered by Capt. Danielle Willsey, before family members, friends and fellow Riverhead police officers in the Town Board meeting room at the start of Thursday’s Town Board meeting.
The Town Board held five public hearings at last week’s meeting, including a hearing on a local law authorizing the board to override the state-imposed real property tax levy limit and the proposed 2025 budget. The record of the hearings was left open for written comment until Nov15.

The board also held a “Monroe Balancing Test” hearing in connection with the application of a communications tower at Wading River Fire Department headquarters.

The three other hearings on the board’s Nov. 7 agenda related to Town Code amendments:
One amendment would allow the construction of docks of up to 25% of the width of the waterways, to a maximum of 150 feet.
The second amendment would amend the parking schedule and supplementary use regulations pertaining to minimum standards for off-street parking for one- and two-family dwellings.
The third amendment would require town elections to continue to be held in odd-numbered years. This amendment was proposed in response to state legislation that would move all local elections to be held in even-numbered years.

The Town Board on Nov. 7 scheduled 18 public hearings on proposed code revisions that would implement various recommendations of the recently completed comprehensive plan update. Among them are:
- Amendment of the town’s transfer of development rights map to include the Residence A-80 and Residence B-80 as sending areas.
- Amendment of the zoning map to change certain properties to the Calverton Industrial (CI) Zoning Use District.
- Amendment of the zoning map to change certain properties to the Hamlet Center (HC) Zoning Use District.
- Amendment of the zoning map to change certain properties to Open Space Conservation (OSC) Zoning Use District.
- Amendment of the zoning map to change certain properties to the Residence B-40 (RB40) Zoning Use District.
- Amendment of the zoning map to change certain properties to the Light Industrial (LI) Zoning Use District.
- Amendment of the zoning code to adopt new schedules for classes of districts, tables of use regulations, and schedule of dimensional regulations.
- Amendment of the zoning code to remove the Industrial B (Ind B) Zoning Use District.

- Amendment of the zoning code regarding permitted uses in the Planned Industrial Park (PIP) Zoning Use District.
- Amendment of the zoning code regarding the Industrial C (IND C) Zoning Use District.
- Amendment of the zoning code regarding the Transfer of Development Rights.
- Amendment of the zoning code regarding definitions and word usage.
- Amendment of the town code regarding term limits for town officers.
The Town Board adopted local laws to amend the following chapters of the town code:
- Chapter 269, “Removal and Return of Abandoned Carts,” increasing the fee for the removal, storage and return of shopping carts from $125 to $175 per cart;
- Chapter 237, “Permit Procedures,” increasing application fee for road opening permit from $200 to $300; and
- Chapter 231, “Fire Prevention,” regarding mobile food preparation vehicles.
In other action last week, the Town Board:
- Amended the 2025 preliminary budget to reduce proposed salary expenditures for the Town Board (supervisor and council members)Appointed a code enforcement officer, Kyle DeRosa
- Appointed a maintenance mechanic II, Jonathan Visek
- Appointed part-time traffic control specialists: Yasmin Diego Merida, Danny Herrera, Andrea Montaperto, Ryan Pfister and Hunter Wicklund
- Provisionally appointed a senior accountant, Michael Montella
- Authorized an application to Suffolk County for HUD Home Funds of up to $242,490 for repairs on two homes, and authorized the supervisor to execute a grant agreement
- Authorized a grant application to Suffolk County for Community Development Block Grant Funding in the amount of $250,000, as follows:
