The first accumulating snowfall of the season is expected late Sunday afternoon into the evening, with snow totals of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Precipitation will begin as rain or a wintry mix Sunday afternoon, then change over to all snow as temperatures fall into the 20s Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service in New York.

Western Suffolk, Nassau and New York City will likely see 4 to 6 inches of accumulations, the weather service said, with higher totals, in the 6 to 8 inch ranges, likely north and west of the city.

Roads will become snow covered, resulting in slippery travel conditions, the Riverhead Police Department said in a weather and travel advisory this afternoon. Anyone planning to travel Sunday evening into Monday morning should use extra caution, police said. Police are asking residents to park all vehicles in driveways, to assist the Riverhead Highway Department in snow removal operations.

“We’re fully ready and prepared for any weather event on Sunday,” RIverhead Highway Superintendent Mike Zaleski said this afternoon. “We already have brined our hilly and bad areas,” he said.

“I kindly ask all residents to have all errands done and vehicles parked off the roads so we can effectively do our job plowing,” Zaleski said.

Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing throughout the week, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
