The Suffolk County Department of Public Works Division of Vector Control plans to treat parts of local marshes by helicopter to control mosquito larvae, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced late Tuesday afternoon.

The treatment by low-altitude helicopter will take place June 11 through June 13, between 1 a.m. and 6 p.m., weather permitting. If weather conditions prevent completion of the work, it will be continued on the next suitable day, the agency said.

The pesticides that will be applied are VectoPrime FG (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) and Altosid (Methoprene)] in granular pellet form.

Local marshes scheduled for the application, the Suffolk County Health Department said, are

No locations in the Town of Southampton or in the Town of Brookhaven, except Point O’ Woods on Fire Island are presently scheduled for treatment, according to the announcement.

“No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely and the products involved have no significant human toxicity,” the health department said in a press release.
