Riverhead Town’s beaches on the Long Island Sound will be closed today “as a result of rough surf and hazardous conditions resulting from Hurricane Erin,” Supervisor Tim Hubbard said in a press release.

All beach operations at Reeves Beach, Wading River Beach and Iron Pier Beach — including bathrooms — will be closed on Friday “for the safety of all residents, beach attendants and lifeguards.” The decision was made after consultation with the police chief and recreation superintendent, according to the press release.

The tide at Sound beaches “have come up very high leaving little beach,” Hubbard said in a follow-up email.

South Jamesport Beach will remain open.

Unless otherwise announced, beach operations will resume on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m..

High surf and high rip current risk advisories are in effect for southeast Suffolk County, and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services has prohibited swimming at all ocean beaches until Saturday morning due to hazardous conditions.
