Dear Members of the Riverhead Town Board, Riverhead Anti-Bias Task Force and Riverhead Community:
I am writing to respectfully urge the Riverhead Town Board to revisit the principles, structure, and practices of the Riverhead Anti-Bias Task Force in light of the resignation of the chair, Mark McLaughlin. While the intention behind the task force—to promote fairness, inclusion, and mutual respect within our community—is important and commendable, its effectiveness and legitimacy depend on transparency, accountability, and broad public trust. I believe Mark was spearheading the task to a more positive and proactive approach, however, without your support.
At present, there is a growing perception among some residents that the task force’s framework may benefit from reassessment. Any body tasked with addressing bias must itself be held to a high standard of neutrality, clarity, and procedural fairness. Without these safeguards, even well-meaning efforts risk undermining confidence in the very goals they seek to advance.
Key areas for reconsideration include:
1. Transparency of Standards and Decisions: Clear guidelines should define how bias is identified, evaluated, and most importantly, addressed. Residents deserve to understand the criteria being applied and how conclusions are reached.
2. Due Process and Fairness: If the task force influences decisions that affect individuals or organizations, there must be a transparent process that allows for response, clarification, and appeal.
3. Scope and Authority: The limits of the task force’s role should be clearly defined. Distinguishing between advisory functions and decision-making authority will help avoid confusion and ensure appropriate checks and balances.
4. Diverse Representation and Viewpoints: To avoid unintended bias, the task force should include a range of perspectives reflective of the broader Riverhead community.
5. Independent Oversight and Periodic Review: Regular, independent evaluations can help ensure the task force remains aligned with its mission and operates in a fair and effective manner.
6. Community Engagement: Public input should be actively sought and incorporated. Open forums and accessible reporting can help strengthen trust and collaboration.
A Path Forward: Rather than abandoning the effort, I encourage the Town Board with the input of the task force members, to adopt a renewed policy framework that reinforces fairness, accountability, and transparency. Establishing clear oversight mechanisms and inviting community participation in the redesign process would demonstrate a strong commitment to both equity and good governance.
The goal should not only be to address bias, but to do so in a way that is itself beyond reproach—rooted in consistency, openness, and respect for all residents.
I strongly encouraged the Anti-Bias Task Force to remain actively engaged in community events by maintaining a consistent and visible presence throughout the town. By showing up and connecting directly with residents, the task force can build trust, raise awareness, and reinforce its commitment to the community. I also advocated for the development and hosting of programs and initiatives focused on fairness, inclusion, and equity—efforts that are essential to cultivating a more welcoming, respectful, and unified environment for all.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this important matter. I hope the board will take this opportunity to strengthen the integrity and effectiveness of the task force for the benefit of the entire Riverhead community.
