The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Long Island Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday, town officials said in a weather and travel advisory issued Wednesday.
Heat index values are expected to reach around 100 degrees across the region, according to the advisory.
Officials urged residents to stay cool by remaining indoors in air-conditioned areas or outside in shaded environments, to limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and to check on vulnerable friends, family and neighbors.
In case of an emergency, residents should dial 911. Anyone in need of assistance due to the heat can call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500, officials said.
Cooling center and extended hours
Town officials said the Riverhead Senior Center will be open as a cooling center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7.
Town beach facilities will also be open until 9 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday, according to the advisory.
Officials also reminded residents not to forget pets, advising they be kept in the shade and provided with plenty of water.
