Riverhead school officials assessing response needed for new immigrant children

Sixty-one immigrants classified as "unaccompanied children" have enrolled in the Riverhead school district since July 1. The district will need to hire additional teachers to handle the influx of children, who need ESL instruction and other services. Riverhead had already added three new ESL positions to the budget this spring to handle existing demand.
