Firefighters respond to second alarm today
Riverhead firefighters responded to reports of smoke this afternoon inside Riverhead Beverage on Osborn Avenue.
The oil burner had backed up, causing a puff-back that spread smoke throughout the store, according to Fire Chief Nick Luparella. The building was evacuated.
Firefighters expelled the smoke from the store with two large fans positioned at two entrances of the building.

Dumpster fire at county’s DPW yard on Riverside
A Dumpster fire broke out at the Suffolk County Department of Public Works highway yard on Riverside Drive this morning.
The Dumpster was fully engulfed in flames when Riverhead firefighters arrived at the scene shortly before 8 a.m., according to Third Assistant Chief Kevin Brooks. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within minutes.
