Opinion: Greg Blass calls on the Riverhead Town Board to reject Calverton Aviation & Technology as the "qualified and eligible" process concludes this week with the April 6 deadline for written comments on the proposal.

A technology entrepreneur who has trained his sights on aerospace is testing innovative rocket engines at the Luminati Aerospace facility in Calverton — but town officials say he's operating there without required town approvals.

Several technology and aviation companies expressed interest in working at EPCAL with Triple Five at the hearing, including a Maglev technology developer and a start-up designing rockets to launch miniaturized satellites into space.

Town board members should not have any private, off-the-record contact with the EPCAL applicants while the Q&E hearing is pending.

The next session of the Calverton Aviation and Technology "qualified and eligible" hearing will be held at the Pulaski Street School auditorium, which has a larger seating capacity than the town hall meeting room.

Riverhead officials are going to issue a request for proposals for the development of an indoor sports and recreation center at the town park in Calverton.

The public hearing on the proposed purchase of 1,643 acres of land at the Calverton Enterprise Park by an aviation startup company will be held on Feb. 27 beginning at 7 p.m.

sPower, which announced last month it would seek to purchase land at the Calverton Enterprise Park for a massive solar energy installation, has brought a lawsuit to block the proposed sale of 1,643 acres to Calverton Aviation and Technology LLC, a joint venture between Luminati Aerospace LLC and Triple Five Real Estate I LLC.

The public hearing on the proposed sale of more than 1,640 acres of land at the Calverton Enterprise Park, which was postponed by the town board two weeks ago “until further notice” will be rescheduled at the next town board meeting, Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith said.
