Holocaust Remembrance Day

The award-winning 2004 film is about a 1998 project undertaken by middle school students in rural Tennessee to understand the magnitude of the Holocaust by compiling six million paper clips to represent the Jews who died during the genocide.

One woman's father survived Kristallnacht by hiding in the trunk of a car. Another woman's grandmother changed their family's surname to "hide their Jewishness." Local speakers whose parents and grandparents fled the Holocaust share their families' stories of survival and the scars still left behind.

Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising on April 19, 1943. Temple Israel will commemorate the day with a program featuring speakers Felice Katz, the daughter of Holocaust surviver, activist and author Etunia Bauer Katz and Father Bohdan Hedz of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead.
