Reeves Beach

Reeves Beach is closed until further notice while the town engineering department undertakes extensive repairs to stabilize the bluff and rebuild the plaza around the gazebo.Officials expect the beach to be reopened this spring.

After a citizen reported Sunday's vehicle fire to the State DEC spill response hotline Sunday night, a state investigator directed the town to have about five cubic yards of contaminated material removed from the beach.

A Jeep got stuck in the sand on Reeves Beach Sunday afternoon and then caught fire, becoming fully engulfed. No one was injured in the incident. The operator, who had a 4x4 permit, was issued a summons for driving on the beach before 6 p.m.

The story behind the wrecks on the beach just west of Reeves Park are the most-asked question fielded by the Riverhead Town historian's office, said town historian Georgette Case.
