Veterans Day ceremonies held today in Riverhead and at Calverton National Cemetery honored the nation's military veterans with prayer, wreaths, music and remembrances.

Today is Veterans Day, a holiday to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. There will be ceremonies honoring our veterans in Riverhead and at Calverton National Cemetery today.

“If the sacrifices made in the Revolutionary War, the Spanish War, the Civil War and the war just ended mean anything, they mean a heritage to all in the future, a responsibility on you and on me to see that what they did and what they fought for bears fruit." A very special guest was in Riverhead for the unveiling of the World War Memorial in 1920: Theodore Roosevelt Jr., son of the late President.

Third-graders at Roanoke Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead Central School District learned about the service and sacrifices of American heroes during a visit from local veterans on Nov. 8.

Members of the Riverhead VFW Post 2476 and American Legion Post 273 and the Riverhead VFW Post 2476 Auxiliary laid wreaths at the base of the granite World War I monument.

Monday, Nov. 11 is a federal holiday honoring our nation's military veterans. Local ceremonies take place at 11 a.m. at the World War I Memorial at the corner of West Main and Court streets.

Local veterans visited third-grade students at Roanoke Avenue School to give them some firsthand lessons about being in the military.

Since Veterans Day fell on a Sunday this year, the federal and N.Y. state holiday is observed on Monday, Nov. 12. Schools, courts, banks and government offices are closed.
