Wrecking crews have begun taking down the buildings at the old Rolle Brothers site on Route 58, where a new commercial development is planned by Richmond Realty, a Riverhead developer that has built several other projects in the Route 58 corridor, including Taco Bell, Panera Bread and the Commerce Drive office complex.

The site being cleared is 6.2 acres and zoned SC (shopping center) district, where permitted uses include, in addition to shopping centers:  office campuses, health clubs and spas, restaurants, and indoor sports and recreation facilities.

No specific tenants have yet inked a deal with the developer, said Ike Israel of Richmond Realty. The site could be developed with more than 40,000 square feet of retail or office space, according to a flyer distributed by the developer.

The main Rolle Brothers building, fronting  Route 58, is slated to be torn down on Monday, Israel said. Rolle Brothers sold agricultural equipment and supplies to local farmers for decades.
