Riverhead Central School District voters will decide the fate of the district’s proposed $136,388,547 operating budget for the 2017-2018 school year. The budget represents a 4.38 percent increase in spending over the current year and calls for a property tax levy increase of 3.77 percent, which is within the property tax levy cap imposed by state law, when allowable exemptions such as capital costs are taken into account.
The budget provides for program expenditures of $102,114,096 — just under 75 percent of total spending. Administrative costs will run $11,431,931, or 8.38 percent of total spending. Capital expenditures ($22,842,519) represent 16.75 percent of total spending.
State aid to education will rise 10.28 percent in the coming fiscal year to $29,434,568.
The district will spend $2.35 million of its appropriated fund balance to offset spending and the tax increase required to pay for it.
For more information, see prior story.
Riverhead voters will also be asked to fill three trustee seats tomorrow. There are five candidates for the three seats. incumbents Chris Dorr and Greg Meyer are seeking re-election. Three challengers look to be seated: Greg Fischer, Yolanda Thompson and Therese Zuhoski. See prior story. The position, a three-year term, is unpaid.
Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at local elementary schools. Residents who have been voting at the high school will now vote instead at Roanoke Avenue Elementary School.
