Riverhead firefighters made a quick stop of a fire in a Middle Road home this afternoon.

The fire started in the basement of the home at 425 Middle Road, east of Ostrander Avenue. It was reported at about 12:20 p.m. and brought under control within about 20 minutes.

There were two occupants in the dwelling at the time of the incident. Both evacuated the house without injury, Riverhead Third Assistant Fire Chief Joe Hartmann said.

The cause of the fire is not yet determined, Hartmann said. The Riverhead Fire Marshal has been called to investigate.

PSEG, which had a crew working in the area, cut power to the home almost immediately.

“Everything was contained to the basement,” the chief said. “There were no extensions.”

Riverhead Fire Department responded with six apparatus, including two ladder trucks and two engines and between 30 and 50 volunteer firefighters, Hartmann said.
