Elizabeth “Sue” Tapfar of Laurel died on Jan. 4, 2026, at home. She was 85 years old.

She was born on July 1, 1940, in Brooklyn, to Mathilda M. (LeBlanc) and Joseph Neithercut. She was the youngest of four children. In her professional career, she worked as an office manager for Island Surgical Association in Malverne. She was also a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck.

Predeceased by her husband George J. Tapfar, she is survived by her children, Kenneth of Laurel and Lori McCarthy of Laurel; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Father Richard Hoerning. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated. Donation forms will be available at the funeral home.
