Riverhead community celebrates Freedom Day
The Butterfly Effect Project hosted its first Juneteenth celebration today at First Baptist Church of Riverhead, commemorating the holiday that marks the date in 1865 when the people of Texas learned that slavery had been abolished.

Donated ‘Butterfly Bus’ is dedicated to the memory — and smile of — Michael Hubbard
"Live each day making memories with a smile," the Butterfly Effect Project's new 'Butterfly Bus’ reminds us. The bus is dedicated to a Riverhead youth whose smile captivated the community as he struggled to recover from severe burns caused by a 'gel candle' explosion in 2011.

Symbolic headstones have been placed on the front lawn of First Baptist Church of Riverhead, beneath a sign that states simply, “WE SHOULD NOT FORGET.” There will be a memorial service at the site on Oct. 1 beginning at 6 p.m.
