The Butterfly Effect Project hosted its first Juneteenth celebration today at First Baptist Church of Riverhead, commemorating the holiday that marks the date in 1865 when the people of Texas learned that slavery had been abolished.

"Live each day making memories with a smile," the Butterfly Effect Project's new 'Butterfly Bus’ reminds us. The bus is dedicated to a Riverhead youth whose smile captivated the community as he struggled to recover from severe burns caused by a 'gel candle' explosion in 2011.

The developer needs to have the zoning changed to allow "low-income" housing rather than the "workforce" housing requirement in the current zoning overlay district, which was written specifically for the Family Community Life Center plan.

The Butterfly Effect Project's Butterfly Action Group has organized "A Celebration of Black Excellence" event to celebrate Black History Month on Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Riverhead.

Thirteen contestants competed for top honors in the Butterfly Effect Project's Second Annual Harvest Festival and Cook-off today on the grounds of First Baptist Church of Riverhead.

Nancy Trofemuk of Calverton, a longtime volunteer at the Open Arms Care Center, which runs a food pantry out of First Baptist Church of Riverhead, was honored by Long Island Cares with its Nancy Bern Volunteer of the Year Award.

The workshop will help low-income PSEG Long Island and National Grid customers eliminate their utility debt. It begins at 5:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Riverhead.

The evening was a stark and moving reminder that at the center of every tragedy that makes the news, there is a person — a person with a family, a person with dreams and aspirations, fears and inhibitions.

Symbolic headstones have been placed on the front lawn of First Baptist Church of Riverhead, beneath a sign that states simply, “WE SHOULD NOT FORGET.” There will be a memorial service at the site on Oct. 1 beginning at 6 p.m.
