Barnes & Noble, the largest chain of book retail stores in the United States, is opening a new store in an empty 10,862-square-foot building in a Route 58 shopping center.

The Planning Board yesterday granted approval to the site plan application of Riverhead Plaza for improvements to 65,267 square feet of vacant commercial space occupied by Walmart until 2014.

A site plan application from the owners of the former Walmart shopping center slated for a Restaurant Depot store came before the Riverhead Planning Board for a public hearing Thursday night.

The planning board will hold a public hearing Thursday on the Long Island Cauliflower Association site plan application proposing four restaurant buildings, three with drive-thru windows, on the northwest corner of Route 58 and Mill Road. One will be occupied by a Chick-fil-A, another by a Jimmy John's and Dunkin'. Tenants for the other two buildings, one of which is a 200-seat sit-down restaurant, have not been announced.

The traffic caused by the BJ's gas station on Ostrander Avenue has been a problem since the station opened, but with gas prices skyrocketing lately, the lines of vehicles waiting to enter the gas station have grown longer and the traffic logjam has gotten much worse local residents said.

County legislators yesterday authorized a 20-year lease of 38,555 square feet of the vacant former Kmart store on Route 58. The Department of Social Services will relocate there from its current space on East Main Street.

Three fast-food restaurants with drive-thru windows — including a Chick-fil-A and a Dunkin' Donuts — as well as a 200-seat sit-down restaurant are now proposed for the seven-acre site on the corner of Mill Road and Route 58.

Despite stores being closed on Thanksgiving this year, Black Friday did not draw shoppers out early this morning in Riverhead. The National Retail Federation says consumer habits have been changing over the years and 2020 was a turning point.
